Frequently asked questions about software metering for Intune
Does Microsoft Intune have built-in software metering?
No. Unlike SCCM (Configuration Manager), Intune does not include native software metering. Intune can report which applications are installed on a device, but it cannot tell you whether anyone actually launched them. This is one of the most commonly cited feature gaps when organisations migrate from SCCM to Intune. Eido fills it with agentless, Intune-native metering that tracks real application usage across your estate.
What replaces SCCM software metering when you move to Intune?
When migrating from SCCM to Intune, you lose software metering, hardware inventory depth and several other management capabilities. Eido is built to cover those gaps. How does Eido track software usage without installing an agent?
Eido uses a PowerShell remediation script deployed through Intune. It runs as an Intune Remediation on each device, collecting application usage data and sending it back to Eido every hour. There is no agent to install or maintain. It works with your existing Intune infrastructure.
Which applications can Eido meter?
Eido can meter any Win32 application that runs on your Intune-managed Windows devices. This includes Adobe Creative Cloud, Autodesk AutoCAD, Microsoft Project, Visio, SolidWorks and hundreds of other desktop applications. If it runs on Windows, Eido can track who ran it, on how many days and for how long.
Can I feed metering data into ServiceNow SAM?
Yes. Eido integrates with ServiceNow Software Asset Management. ServiceNow SAM reads monthly usage from Eido, and sends Eido the reclamation rules it wants measured, so there is no spreadsheet in between.
How quickly can I see a return from software metering?
Usage figures appear the day after the scripts are deployed, and build from there. Eido cannot see usage from before it was installed. As an example of the arithmetic, reclaiming 50 unused licences at $660 per user per year is $33,000 a year.
